The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka has received nine new refrigerated trucks to help improve vaccine delivery for children. These trucks were provided by UNICEF, thanks to funding from the Government of Japan.
In a special ceremony, the trucks were handed over by Japan's Ambassador to Sri Lanka, MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, and UNICEF's Acting Representative in Sri Lanka, Begoña Arellano, to the Health Minister, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana.
Dr. Pathirana expressed his gratitude, saying, “These trucks will greatly enhance our ability to transport vaccines safely and on time, strengthening our healthcare system.”
This donation is part of a larger $3 million contribution from Japan, which has also funded cold storage equipment and portable vaccine carriers to keep vaccines at the right temperature. These have been gradually provided to Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health since 2021.
The trucks will help move vaccines from central storage to regional centers and health facilities across the country. Begoña Arellano of UNICEF highlighted the importance of this support, stating, “Vaccines need to be kept at specific temperatures. These trucks will help us reach every child in Sri Lanka with the right vaccine at the right time.”
