The Sri Lankan Parliament's Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development has discussed a new method for collecting PET plastic bottles using a QR code system. MP Ajith Mannapperuma highlighted that while 450,000 tons of plastic are imported annually, only 50,000 tons are recycled, with the rest causing environmental damage. The Committee is seeking proposals on a QR code-based recycling system and has extended the submission deadline to August 27th. They also recommend making the Extended Producer Responsibility system mandatory to improve recycling efforts.
