Sri Lanka's Green Initiatives Attract More Tourists

Sri Lanka is experiencing a significant boost in tourism thanks to its eco-friendly initiatives. In 2022, 289,405 tourists visited, which rose to 444,053 in 2023. Already in the first half of 2024, 364,521 tourists have visited, with a growing number of foreign tourists now making up 40% of visitors.

Key ecotourism developments include:

New Destinations and Facilities: Gal Oya National Park, Manigala Forest Lodge in Knuckles, a bicycle path in Udawattakele, and Bandarawela Falls Lodge.

Enhanced Visitor Experience: Exclusive sanitary facilities for foreign tourists and an online ticket reservation system for popular national parks.

Mangrove Restoration: Sri Lanka planted 326 hectares of mangroves and received the United Nations Flagship Award for its efforts.

Zoological Gardens: Revenue from the National Zoological Gardens increased by 66% from 2023 to 2024.

State Timber Corporation: Achieved a revenue of Rs. 2,000 million in 2024.

Human-Wild Elephant Conflict: Over 4,700 workers hired to maintain electric fences, and plans for a nationwide elephant population survey.
